The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

The Road goes ever on and on
Out from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
Let others follow it who can!
Let them a journey new begin,
But I at last with weary feet
Will turn towards the lighted inn,
My evening-rest and sleep to meet.

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though I oft have passed them by,
A day will come at last when I
Shall take the hidden paths that run
West of the Moon, East of the Sun."

-- The Walking Song of Bilbo Baggins
As told by J. R. R. Tolkien

Let's get serious.
Let us speak with clear words.
Meaning what we say,
And saying
how we mean
what we feel
when we are
what is real:
Not banalities,
nor pleasant
platitudes
of suburban life;
But please, let us speak
Not just of the painful
--yes, life can be harsh,
Nor just the sad
--just because it hurts
does not make it more real
or more deserving
of our attention.
The Glad
Need not be silly
And happiness and hope
are no less serious
for their joy.
Let us laugh,
And get serious.

— Jerry E. Smith, 1978

"I am a pilgrim. . .a wanderer;

And a pilgrim is a wanderer with a purpose.

A pilgrimage can be either to a place or for a thing;

And mine is for a thing: peace." Peace Pilgrim (1908-1981)
